This Week in 4th Grade...

One Round of MCAS Over!

Students worked extremely hard on the ELA MCAS last Thursday and Friday.  It was challenging and required a ton of hard work but no one gave up, everyone used their strategies and we couldn't be more proud of our community!

The Math MCAS is coming up on May 7th and 8th.  Please do not schedule any appointments or other activities that may force your child to be out of school on those days.

Math Workshop

We are continuing to work on reviewing the skills we have learned this year.  On Monday, the kids will get their "game faces on."  Then they will be assigned to a team.  They will work in teams to solve some word problems throughout the week.  As a team they will earn points and even some LL Bucks!

We will continue to work on decimals.  Last week we used money to think about decimals.  The kids were excited to see the connection between math and money.  This week we will work on ordering decimals and comparing decimals.

Reader's Workshop

This week students will dive back into non-fiction and research skills.  We will wrap up our research on the Southeast and put the finishing touches on our Prezi presentations.  Students have been very engaged with these projects and are looking forward to sharing their learning with one another!

This Week in Fourth Grade....

We hope everyone enjoyed April vacation and Easter!  It is crazy to think we are starting the last stretch of 4th grade!

MCAS

This week the students will take the ELA MCAS on Thursday and Friday.

Math Workshop

We are starting our unit on decimals in math.  We will take what we have learned about fractions to help us with learning about decimals to the tenths and hundredths.

At this time of year we also spend time reviewing all that we have learned throughout the year.  Our focus is on stopping and thinking about what we know about a topic and then thinking about how to approach that problem.

Reader's Workshop

This week we will be reviewing and celebrating our learning so far this year.  We want students to enter the MCAS test on Thursday and Friday of this week confident and ready to do their best.

Once MCAS is complete, students will continue to learn research and non-fiction comprehension strategies.  They will also participate in book clubs that will require students to synthesize their learning from this year.

This Week in Fourth Grade...

Parent Conferences

We have 2 half days this week on Tuesday and Wednesday.  We have a lot of parents signed up for conferences.  If you would still like to sign up, please do so.  If the link doesn't allow you to, please let us know and we will let you know what we have available.

Yearbook Photos

Last week you should have received information from Mrs. Provost regarding the fourth grade yearbook.  If you have seen any pictures on our blog that you would like to have in the yearbook, please feel free to print and send to Mr. Falla at bfalla@yahoo.com.  He is the fourth grade parent that will be gathering photos.

Book Fair

Our classes will be going to the Scholastic Book Fair on Thursday and Friday of this week.  If you are coming in for a conference, you can also visit the fair at that time!

Panoramic Photo

The entire fourth grade will be having a panoramic photo done on Friday of this week.  The flyers for purchasing the photo went home last week.  If you did not receive one, let us know and we can send another one home.

Students are asked to wear Farley Spirit Wear or Farley Fox Red on Friday.

Spirit Week

Next week is Spirit Week!  An email from Mrs. Provost went home explaining the different days.  Here they are in cased you missed it!

Monday - Crazy Hat day
Tuesday - Red Sox gear or red white and blue
Wednesday - Silly sock day
Thursday - Mismatch day
Friday - Farley spirit wear day or wear red

Beat the Test

We spent some time this week looking at multiple choice questions on the MCAS test and discussing strategies that students could use to "beat" the questions.  We turned the lessons and practice into a game.  Below are some photos from the activities.

Teamwork!

Students spent time working together in the gym to "pass the beanbag" using hands, then elbows, then knees and finally feet.  It was quite a challenge but no one gave up and everyone worked hard to communicate and help one another!
