This Week in Fourth Grade....

Math Workshop

We continued our project based on the book "If the World Were a Village."  The kids worked together to show their data on a grid.  They also had to analyze the data and answer questions based on the data they had.  Most groups had enough time to create a Flipgrid video to show off all of their learning.  Later this week, I will create a website that will house all the completed Flipgrids.  The kids are very excited to share these with the world!  :)

Writing Workshop

The kids have been working hard on comparing and contrasting two different sharks, whales, or dolphins.  This is the second part to their website.  Some kids will have to finish typing this for homework this week.  Be on the lookout for a reminder email.

Science

We started our Erosion unit last week.  We talked about finding evidence that the Earth is changing.  We started by looking outside of our classroom for evidence of this.  We also started our project using Playdough.  Thank you so much for the generous donations.  The kids had a blast creating a "sculpture."

Reader's Workshop

Students continued to learn non-fiction comprehension strategies and research skills.  Our focus last week was to synthesize our research from more than one source.  We also began writing scripts to use for iMovies that we will create this week.  This allowed us to practice our summarizing skills that we learned a couple of weeks ago as well.  Students are excited to finish their scripts and get to work on their iMovies about topics from the Southwest this week!  Below are some pictures of students at work.

Book Clubs

Students have been participating in book clubs of their choice over the past couple of weeks.  This has been a wonderful opportunity for students to apply all of their learning over the year in books that are full of thought-provoking, discussion-worthy topics.  Club members have been encouraged to take charge of their meetings and students have been deciding together how much to read, what to focus on, and when the next meeting will be.  The level of engagement and ownership over the clubs has been wonderful!  I have enjoyed taking on the role of coach during the discussions and seeing just how much students have really grown this year!

Coming Events

There are so many different activities coming up over the next several weeks!  Stay tuned for a special email with a list of events, times and other info!
